Psychology as a science which studies human beings, has long been interested in the concept of love. Only problem is, as an abstract concept ... love so that it is difficult to be approached scientifically. In this paper selected the theory of a psychologist, Robert Sternberg. Who have attempted to describe the love in the context of a relationship between two people.
According to Sternberg, is a love story, a story written by each person. The story reflects the personality, interests and feelings of a relationship. There are stories about the war for power, mystery, games, etc.. The story on each person comes from the "scenario" the familiar, whether from parents, experiences, stories, etc.. This story is usually how it affects people behave and act in a relationship.
Sternberg is famous for his theory of "Love Triangle" (not a love triangle you know ...!). Love triangle that contains the components: (1). Intimacy (Intimacy), (2). Passion (Passion) and (3). Commitment.
Intimacy is the emotional element, in which there is warmth, faith (trust), and the desire to build relationships. Characteristics include a person will feel close to someone, happy to converse with him till a long time, felt a longing if not seen. Passion is the motivational element that is based on encouragement from within a sexual nature. Commitment is the cognitive element, the decision to form a continuous and still run a life together.
According to Sternberg, each component was in each one a different degree. There are just high on passion but low on commitment. While the ideal love is a commitment that if all three are in the appropriate proportions at any given time. For example in the early stages of a relationship, most of the components of intimacy. After intimacy passion continues on a larger (in some cultures) should be accompanied with greater commitment, such as through marriage.
As previously described, the relationship of love someone very much determined by his own experience from childhood. How did his parents love each other express their feelings (or even merely a fight ..). N the early relationship premises close friends, romantic stories to the horror, and so on. will imprint and affect a person in touch. Therefore advised everyone to be aware of the love story written for himself.
Indeed, Sternberg's theory about love is not complete and satisfy all the people for example how these theories can explain the love the mother of his children?
Or how love can be contrasted with war and hatred?
Only, as a scientific description of the phenomenon of love, this theory can be quite helpful in mapping patterns of relationships between individuals.
